At Lake Bluff Dental, Dr. Carolyn Griffin can help you restore your smile and remove stains caused by tobacco use, drinking beverages like coffee and tea, or the natural aging process. We offer professional take-home whitening and in-office whitening, which are ideal for patients of all ages. Learn more below, or contact us now for a cosmetic consultation in Shorewood.
With take-home teeth whitening, you can restore your smile in the comfort of your own home, and enjoy professional results without having to sit in the dentist’s chair. Take-home whitening is a more gradual process compared to in-office whitening, and is done over a period of several weeks. Some patients prefer this, since it’s less obvious that they have had their teeth whitened.
You’ll come to our office to have a set of custom-built whitening trays made. Then, you’ll come back after a couple of weeks to pick up your trays and a set of whitening products, and to get instructions on how to use them from Dr. Griffin. Then, you’ll just follow her instructions to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.
Compared to DIY at-home whitening with an over-the-counter kit, take-home teeth whitening provides better overall results, is safer for your teeth and gums, and allows you to brighten your teeth more quickly.

In-office whitening is a better option if you want to get fast results. For example, if you have a special occasion like a photo shoot or a wedding coming up, you can get your teeth whitened professionally by Dr. Griffin and brighten your smile up to 5 shades or more in a single appointment.
At your appointment, Dr. Griffin will clean your mouth, then apply a protectant to your gums and oral tissue. Next, she will apply a whitening gel or paste to your teeth, and use a UV light to “activate” the whitener and enhance its effects. After a few minutes, the gel will be rinsed off, and the process will be repeated until your desired level of whiteness is achieved. Patients with severe stains or who want very bright teeth may require multiple in-office appointments with Dr. Griffin.
As long as you have a healthy mouth, you’re a good candidate for teeth whitening. However, teeth whitening is not recommended if you have one or more untreated cavities, or if you suffer from gum disease such as gingivitis. You should get treatment for your oral health issues before discussing teeth whitening with Dr. Griffin.
You should also bear in mind that teeth whitening will not whiten things like composite dental fillings, veneers, dental bonding, or dental crowns. If you have any of these treatments, discuss them with Dr. Griffin so that she can determine the proper shade for your smile, and provide you with an even appealing whitening treatment.
